Baby care
The baby skin differs significantly from that of an adult. Its fatty tissue (subcutaneous layer) is not fully developed and the epidermis is thin and delicate. This makes baby skin very sensitive to such external factors as inadapted cosmetics, harsh clothes and diapers and sunshine which is very dangerous in the first year of life. The baby gets cold very quickly because his/her fatty tissue is thin.
The bath is the essential element of baby care. Before bathing your baby prepare the soap, bath lotion, washcloths, cotton balls to wash the face, a bowl with warm, boiled water, soft terry towel and the clothes.
Lay down dressed baby on a changing table or cupboard. Wash the head with a cotton ball dampened in the boiled water. Wash each eye with a separate cotton ball, from the outer towards the inner corner of the eye. Wash the vestibule of the nose with another cotton ball. Wash the auricles with two more cotton balls. Do not wash the inside of the ear. Finally wipe the face delicately, starting from the forehead to the cheeks to the lip area.
Undress the baby quickly. If his/her bottom is dirty, wash it before the bath. Fill the tub with water approximately halfway (if it is one of the first baths, fill it up to ¼). Put a small towel, a cloth nappy or a bath seat at the bottom of the tub to make it less hard and slippery. The best water temperature is about 36°C with a room temperature of about 24°C. Add some bath lotion with baby oil (which more effectively seals moisture into the baby skin) or some Bobini Baby shampoo combined with bath lotion. Wash the baby either before the bath or once in the tub. The choice of the method depends on baby’s and parents’ preferences. Some parents may for instance be afraid to carry the soapy baby.
Slip the baby into the tub holding him/her with one hand – support his/her head with your wrist and grab his/her arm with your hand. Support his/her bottom and back with the other hand; you can later use it to wash the baby. If you want to turn the baby, put one hand under his/her belly and the other under his/her armpit. In this way you provide support for the baby’s head. Soap the washcloth or sponge and wipe the baby moving from the neck towards the belly, the back, the legs to the bottom. Remember to wash the girls’ genital area from front to back in order to avoid vaginal infections. When you wash a boy, never retract the foreskin. Baby skin is particularly sensitive in places to which the air has a difficult access and where dirt and sweat tend to gather – all skin folds and creases which form under the arms, in the groins, on the neck and belly. That is why you should pull back every skin fold and cleanse it. The same applies to every space between fingers or toes. The bath should not take more than 7 minutes because the water gets cold. A longer stay in the water may make the baby’s skin lose its lipid content and moisturizing elements. Take the baby out of the bathtub and wrap him/her in a terry towel to make it absorb the humidity (do not wipe the baby).
If the baby’s skin looks healthy, once you have dried it, just apply some baby lotion (which is better absorbed) or baby oil. On the other hand, if it shows redness, which may indicate an early stage of inflammation, it is recommended to use cream, which soothes and prevents inflammations. Otherwise a more serious skin infection, caused by yeast-like fungi or bacteria, may develop and spread over inner organs. If you suspect any skin infection, contact the doctor immediately.
When the skin is dry, dress the baby in a cotton top without skin irritating elements such as frills, tied on the side (not on the back). Then put a diaper and comfortable, loose fitting rompers with a crotch closure. If it is cold, you can put a thin cotton cap on the baby’s head.
Baby bottom requires a very special care. Paediatricians recommend changing diapers immediately after the baby has passed the stool and at least every 3 hours when he/she only urinates. If the baby tends to posset food, change the diaper before the feeding. It is best to do this in a room with a temperature at about 22-24°C. Have all indispensable baby care accessories handy so as not to leave your baby alone during the diaper changing. First cleanse the bottom carefully using for example moist baby wipes or soap and water, paying special attention to each skin fold. When changing the diaper, you must not straighten the baby’s legs or lift him by feet, because it may cause hip joint dislocation. Then pour some drops of baby oil and massage it onto the baby’s skin. Once the baby is freed from diaper, he loves to move his legs. You should let him do this, because it allows air access to the skin. When changing the diaper, do not forget to show the baby your love by caressing, singing and smiling to him/her. Before you put on the new diaper, it is recommended to apply onto the baby’s skin a small amount of protective cream, which will form a thin layer. Remember not to grease the diaper fastening with the cream.
